Glass Bead Blasting
Glass bead blasting is one of the most invasive, yet effective methods of calcium removal. Glass bead blasting makes use of particles of hardened glass that are applied at high pressure. We will never use glass bead blasting unless it’s the last resort. Instead, we use Maxx Strip – a much softer, powder-like media. It has a hardness level of 3.5, which is minuscule in contrast to glass beads’ 7. We use this method on glass tile, soft tile, as well as soft stone.
Soda Blasting
On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, soda blasting rates 2.4. Soda blasting is vastly inferior to glass bead blasting’s rating of 7 but much less abrasive and harsh. It would be an excellent calcium removal method if calcium boasted average harshness of 2.4 or less. However, with a Mohs rating of 3, calcium is harsher than soda, meaning that soda blasting is an inefficient calcium removal method. The Maxx Strip method that we use boasts a rating of 3.5, which is vastly superior.
Salt Blasting
On the Mohs scale, salt blasting rates an average of 3.5. It could be a real competitor for our Maxx Strip method; however, salt blasting is synonymous with the Maxx Strip method. The material is also known as Kieserite, and it boasts the perfect rating on the Mohs scale. Your average pool tile rates somewhere around 7.5 in hardness and calcium is, as mentioned, 2.4, making the Maxx Strip method, at 3.5, a perfect rating on the pool cleaning scale.
